Raw materials for furniture, personal fab style

I learned on boingboing of sofa-bricks, described as “the first example of PARASITE FURNITURE, which will involve existing environments in a structure of design. It is a challenge to cancel the boundaries between people, objects, and environments which should live together and help each other.” ….in any case, I am reminded of FAB: The Coming Revolution on Your Desktop, Neil Gershenfeld and these bricks strike me as raw materials for furniture On the other hand, how different is this than cinder blocks and 1x6s aka my bookshelf?  These are just soft cinder blocks.
